am writing to express my outrage at Adidas- support for the slaughter of kangaroos.
Every year, millions of kangaroos are shot to supply kangaroo leather - this year
alone the quota is seven million adults. One million baby -joeys- will also be
killed - stamped, hit with metal bars or decapitated. Countless other -at foot-
infant kangaroos will be left without a mother. Too young to fend for themselves,
they will all die from predation or starvation. A main reason for the massacre
is to supply sports shoe manufacturers, including Adidas who, as you know, use
the skins to make football boots such as the Predator. In an email recently leaked
to Viva!, John Kelly, of the KIAA, stated: "This (soccer boot) industry is
vital to the kangaroo industry. Without it underpinning kangaroo skin prices the
entire industry would be at risk¦. With 70 per cent of the market for professional
football boots, Adidas is clearly the driving force behind the bloodshed. The
Australian government and KIAA have promoted the killing for economic reasons
and their justification for it - damage to wheat crops, competition for grazing
and population explosion - do not stand up to examination. According to CSIRO,
95 per cent of wheat crops never even see a kangaroo. Dr S. Mcleod (UNSW) concluded
that ?There is no evidence of a competitive effect of red kangaroos on sheep¦.
Gordon Grigg, author of the industry bible, The Commercial Exploitation of Kangaroos
recently stated that the competitive effect of kangaroos on sheep had been overestimated
by nearly 500 per cent and killing them was ?probably doomed to failure¦. Amanda
Bilton (UNSW) found that red kangaroos populations have not exploded and are,
in fact, being killed faster than they can reproduce. Australia has the
worst record in the world for exterminating wildlife and so its government-s assurances
are meaningless - they are also scientifically insupportable. Targeting the largest
animals destroys any concept of natural selection and their prospects for long-term
survival. The biggest, most knowledgeable and most able animals are the ones who
would naturally become alpha leaders of a mob and pass on their superior genes.
Red kangaroo males would not naturally breed until they are ten or more years
old. Their average age is now just two (UNSW). In evolutionary terms this is a
pending disaster. The Adidas name cannot grow and prosper by plundering
the planet-s wildlife, 75 per cent of which is already facing serious decline
or extinction. Far better to boast of your advances in creating high-tech, synthetic
materials, which place you in the forefront of technology. I and countless other
concerned people like me, refuse to support this suffering. I pledge to boycott
all Adidas products, and encourage others to do the same, until you no longer
